Hello Brian, all my reamers have the size stamped on them..ie: the 8mm says 8x57 mauser. the 8-06 ditto. I

Hope Z1R will chime in here,he's a gunsmith and could tell ya better than me. I don't have my 8x57 reamer at the moment to take a measurement for you....Dave PS. I looked in my book, the lenght of neck portion of the 8x57 is .319 " long..Maybe that's what he measured.

Some one would have had to special order a reamer made for .318 bore. And as has been said, most often non standard reamers are marked with teh specs. For instance I hjust received a 6.5x55 match reamer. teh neck & other pertinent info was etched on the reamer. You need to be sure exactly where he is measuring. As I see it the two critcal measure ments would be the pilot size and the neck size. Both would be smaller on a reamer designed for a .318 bore.

If you are measuring the pilot diameter it would be .....

bore (groove ) diameter ( .323 ) minus ( 2 X land height )

I just measured ( caliper ) the pilot on my 8-06 at .314.

By the above math it looks as if PPG figured on about .005 high lands.

Hope this helps
