milsurpcollector
I just bought a turk from SOG hoping for a small ring and I got a G98 rework instead. I was going to buy a turk on gunbroker. Is there a way to tell if the turk is a small ring action by the receiver stamp, the factory it was made or something? z1r
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR. A SR Mauser means a pre-98. Do you really want a pre-98 or are you looking for a small ring threaded 98? The SR thread 98 is marked K.Kale. It is a standard 98 action but has SR threads.

donmarkey
Im looking for a sr threaded 98. The standard m 98 with sr threads If you pay their handpick fee, SOG will make sure it's a k. kale. -Don
tinkerfive
Aside from the Kkale stamp, the length of the front ring is longer than the GEW 98 due to the hand guard retainer ring. They should know that without a hand pick fee. I bought a lot of 5 and 1 was a 'Turked' Gew 98. I called them up and talked to customer service. They took the GEW 98 back, paid for the shipping and sent me back an honest to goodness Kkale. In the advertisement it says something like 'large ring small thread shank' or something to that effect and that isn't what a GEW 98 is. So they didn't send you what they advertised. Maybe if they get enough returns, they will take the time to look and only send out the Kkales. They should be selling the GEW 98's seperatly for $45 or so. then you could afford to buy them just for bolts and bottom metal etc. Tinker
milsurpcollector
Thanks for the replies everyone. Im going to keep the G98 as a curiosity plus the fact that I aleady stripped it. You can still see some of the G98 markings which is cool
tinkerfive
You know, I have one of those 19" 7X57 barrels. I was thinking that being a 'lower' pressure round wouldn't likely blow out the three remaining threads if the 8X57 hasn't.

I was thinking that being a 'lower' pressure round wouldn't likely blow out the three remaining threads if the 8X57 hasn't. And there are other lower pressure rounds than the 8x57 available for the Gew 98 and the remaining threads would be fine if you handload to lower pressures. Hell, you can buy cheap Mossbergs that are safe for higher pressure rounds at Academy Sports. They have one for less than $300 that has been tested by a gun magazine and rated as a best buy. But it ain't a mauser, and I agree with the others that to build your own you need to start with the best. And that ain't the weakened Turked Gew 98s. fritz
